This WebQuest has been designed to help guide you during your inquiry project.  You will have access to several websites and book titles that are filled with interesting information about several important women who have had a major impact in our country's history. 

                                  
Keep in mind our essential questions:     
 
  1. Who is (the person being studied)?
  2. How did (the person being studied) impact America's history?

The Task
 

Over the next six weeks, we will be studying how certain women have influenced our American history, impacting how we live today.

The Process
 
This unit will be differentiated based on your interests. 
 
Reading Element: 
  • As a whole group we will learn about Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, and Marian Anderson.
  • We will read three selections titled: Who was Eleanor Roosevelt, Moses, and When Marian Sang
  • During the reading of each selection, we will all take notes on the important information that helps us to learn about who these incredible people were.  Following each reading, you all will be invovled in literature discussions and small group sharing sessions, refecting on what was read. 
  • In small groups and as a whole group we will discuss how these specific women influenced how we live today. 
  • Each one of you will select a biography to read about someone who you find interesting.  (The biographies you select do not have to be about a woman, you may choose to read about a man how had a great impact on America's history.)
  • Everyone will read a biography nightly applying the reading strategies learned and practiced in class.  (chunking information, summarizing)
Writing Element:
  • Writing will be integrated into this unit in the form of projects and essays.
  • As a whole class we will write a 5 paragraph essay reflecting on the life of Marian Anderson and how she influenced America's history. 
  • We will guide each other through writing a 5 paragraph essay incorportating small and whole group brainstorm sessions, partner writing, peer conferencing, and student/teacher conferencing sessions.
  • You all will independently write an essay reporting on the person you have selected to learn about.  
  • At the conclusion of this unit, we will all prepare mini-presentations including the information gathered using our class websites and book selections supporting this unit.

Each writing component to this unit will be graded using the Pennsylvania Writing Scoring Domain Rubric.
