Welcome Back!  In the 2011 - 2012 school year, we will focus on three initiatives:  Student Achievement, Student Wellness, and Making Global Connections.  As we do each year, we will continue to monitor the academic progress of all students.  Teachers have already started analyzing and interpreting student assessment data to inform and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of their students.  After much work over the past two years, a district committee has developed a standards-based report card which will be implemented this year with our first and second grade students and in the coming years kindergarten and grades 3,4,& 5.  This report card will provide specific feedback to you about your child’s progress as he or she works toward reaching proficiency in all of the academic standards.

Another one of the district’s goals is to improve the overall physical, mental, nutritional, and environmental wellness of our students.  A district-wide committee has been developed as well as committees in each building.  The first year of this initiative will focus on improving the food kids eat in the café.  We now have a salad bar option in each of our schools and have been encouraging the students to try it.  At our first wellness committee meeting, we completed a Healthy Schools Survey from the American Heart Association to gather baseline data which will be used by the district committee for future planning.

The global connections initiative will involve students increasing their global awareness and understanding of different cultures through classroom experiences.  All students will participate in a global connections activity or project and establish a partnership with students in other states/countries using a form of technology.

We will continue with school programs and activities which help students develop positive relationships with each other and their teachers.  We will continue to build character, promote student leadership, and help them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.  With your support, our goal is to create kind, caring children who make caring choices.

Have a great school year!
